About
Shodokan Trinidad
Shodokan Aikido is a unique style of Aikido created by Shihan Kenji Tomiki (8th Dan). This is the style taught at the Trinidad and Tobago Aikido Club. It utilises training methods that include randori, or free practice, which allows a practitioner to employ possibly dangerous techniques in a controlled, yet dynamic manner .......and at full speed. It is one of the Aikido styles that is more suited to the needs of self-defence as techniques are developed for competition and practicality. Weaponry is also an integral part of the Shodokan's practice, utilising Bokken (wooden samurai sword) and Jo (4 1/2 foot staff) techniques and kata.
The Trinidad and Tobago Aikido Club (Shodokan Trinidad) is affiliated with the Japan Aikido Association, and is the official local J.A.A. representative. The club is also a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Judo Association. It is presently the only Shodokan Aikido school in the Caribbean Region and was started in 1994 by Jerome Chin-Aleong who started Aikido in England and has trained and competed successfully there and in Japan on many occasions.
Larry Camejo is the present Instructor at the club. He has been practicing Shodokan Aikido since 1995 and has been graded to Nidan (2nd degree Black Belt) by Shihan Fumiaki Shishida in 2004. He also holds Shodan rank in Akayama Ryu Jujutsu and is the official local representative of the system. He is the first Shodokan Aikidoka to be graded to Black Belt on Trinidad soil. Mr. Camejo has also had the great honour of receiving private one-on-one instruction from Shihan Fumiaki Shishida, 8th Dan Director of the Japan Aikido Association and primary author of the book "Aikido: Tradition and the Competitive Edge."
